Provenance

Henri Christophe was a Haitian slave and leader in the Haitian Revolution. He eventually became King of Haiti and established an elaborate and whimsical system of honours, peerage, and heraldry in his kingdom, commemorated in a manuscript now known as the Haiti Armorial. Bees, flamingos, whales, and mythical creatures are frequent charges in the armorial - as is the black and red banner of Henri Christophe.
