When Babar's mother is killed by a hunter, he is adopted by an Old Lady, who hires him a tutor. He returns to the jungle in his iconic green suit and is named King of the Elephants. What follows in the subsequent Babar books written and illustrated both by Jean de Brunhoff, and by his son, Laurent, is a potent mixture of glamorous, mid-century jet-set travel; family dramas and diversions, feasts and parties; and, of course, occasional matters of state.
